Florida Keys Sheriff Takes On Human Smuggling Case

KEYS OFFICIALS TAKE ON HUMAN SMUGGLING CASE: Federal agents witnessed a boat drop 20 migrants in a remote spot in the Keys over the weekend.

The feds eventually detained everyone involved Sunday night. But the U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to file charges, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay said.

So Monroe County law enforcement is charging five South Florida men with human smuggling charges under state law.

“If they won’t do their jobs, we’ll do ours,” Ramsay told the Miami Herald, “and let people know that if you commit a crime in Monroe County, you’re not going to get away with it.”
